Look out for the announcement of the 2010 Booktrust Teenage Prize shortlist.

The shortlist of six books will be announced on 7 September and the winner will receive a cheque for £2,500, which will be presented at the awards ceremony in London on 1 November.

Booktrust is pleased to announce the 2010 panel of judges for the Booktrust Teenage Prize.

This year’s judging panel will be chaired by popular children’s and young adult author Tony Bradman and includes:

  • Journalist and author Barbara Ellen

  • Author and reviewer Mary Hoffman

  • Chartered Librarian Barbara Band

  • 2009 Booktrust Teenage Prize young judge Claudia Freemantle.

Tony Bradman comments:

‘I was delighted when Booktrust asked me to be Chair of Judges for the Booktrust Teenage Prize 2010. It’s a fascinating area of children’s books, not least because it’s usually assumed that getting teenagers to engage with books is a tough call. But from what I’ve seen I think that writers and publishers are definitely rising to the challenge! We have a formidably strong team of judges (of all ages!), and I’m looking forward to reading lots of great books and having some interesting discussions.’

Barbara Ellen comments:

‘The Booktrust Teenage Prize has never been more important. As the parent of a teenager, I know that keeping the reading habit alive is a real challenge. The world of teenage fiction is turning out to be as varied as the standard is high. I suppose it has to be to keep its grip on the mercurial ever-questioning adolescent psyche. I expect my head to hurt. But in a good way.’

Teenage Prize 2010 Judges Press Release

Teenage Prize 2010 writing competition: What would you do if you were invisible? Entries now closed.

Look out for the announcement of the winners of this year's Teenage Prize writing competition. This year's theme was inspired by The Graveyard Book, and teenagers were asked  to write a short story about being invisible.

A panel of judges will select the best four short stories and the prize for each winner will be:
> a place on the Booktrust Teenage Prize judging panel to help choose the 2010 teenage book of the year
> a ticket to the award ceremony in London in November
> the chance to meet and interview all the shortlisted authors, using a flipcam – yours to keep
> a complete set of the shortlisted titles
> your winning story published on the Booktrust website.

The deadline has now closed for submissions to the Booktrust Teenage Prize 2010.

Now in its eighth year, the Booktrust Teenage Prize is a national book prize that recognises and celebrates the best in contemporary writing for teenagers.  It is run with the support of The Reading Agency, which publicises the Teenage Prize in libraries across the UK, primarily through coordination with public and school library services.

We are delighted that the panel of five judges will be chaired by author Tony Bradman, and will include one of the teenage judges from the Booktrust Teenage Prize 2009 panel. The judging panel will be joined by another four teenagers, winners of a writing competition, to decide the winner.

Books published between 1 July 2009 and 30 June 2010 are eligible and the closing date for entries is 5pm Monday 8 March 2010.  Genres include fiction and non-fiction, including short story collections, graphic novels, poetry and reference books. They will be judged together.

Publishers can submit up to five titles per imprint.

For the purpose of the prize ‘teenage’ encompasses young adults between the ages of 12-16.
